LABOR Day 2016 saw the 16th resumption of the annual John Jay Futbol Club Tournament, powered by Global Team Events.
The tournament, held over two days at the beautiful Onatru Farm Park, South Salem, allowed teams from the Greater New York area to play competitive games against similar opposition ahead of the fall soccer season.
This year, over 100 teams entered the tournament with the girl’s playing on Saturday and the boys taking to the fields Sunday. John Jay FC, who predominantly play out the Westchester Youth Soccer League, were joined by teams from New Canaan, Scarsdale, Ridgefield, Edgemont and other surrounding towns to put on a showcase of soccer.
On Saturday, nine Labor Day champions were crowned across U9 – U15 brackets. In the U11 purple bracket it came down to a fierce game between the John Jay Thunder and SCOR Black with the latter winning their deciding game 2-0 against Ways Storm to be crowned champions.
In one of the more competitive brackets, The John Jay Strikers narrowly beat out New Canaan Red to win the U12 purple bracket. New Canaan would not leave empty handed however as they won two of the other championships on offer that day.
Arguably the closest bracket of the afternoon was the Girls U15 Purple bracket. In the final game of the day the NY Xtreme FC girls played out a tie with LaGrange, meaning penalty kicks were needed to decide a winner. Despite the added pressure and tension, the NY Xtreme girls held their nerve to come away with the win, celebrating their victory on the field as a whole team.
With Saturday concluding in spectacular fashion the boys had much to live up to on the Sunday. The first bracket of the day, the U15 boys did not disappoint, with the John Jay Crew and the Scarsdale Spurs playing out a thrilling game. Despite Scarsdale hitting the crossbar twice, it was John Jay who ran away with the 2-0 victory on the way to sharing the bracket championship with Just Play Soccer.
In the highly competitive U12 Purple bracket, FCUSA New York suffered a tough loss to eventual winners Edgemont United, a reverse of their last meeting at the Scarsdale Memorial Day Tournament.
